Full of beans

Hiya, the broadband signal is painfully slow this evening, could it be the wind, it's blowing a hooli outside. I've just watched George Clarke's Amazing Spaces and it was all stop start. Mind you, I was uploading these photo's at the same time, maybe that's what slowed it down.
I did another Tesco dash last night at 8pm, to get Bugsy some more chicken, he's going to cost a fortune at this rate. It's a good job I got my own food for pennies, thank goodness for yellow stickers.
Look at this great haul, and all healthy food as well. Three packs of pea and bean shoots, £1.25 reduced to 13p.
Pea and bean salad, was £2.20, now 21p.

Three nectarines, £3 down to 30p. Who would pay full price for those, crazy.

Three tubs of prepared fruit, melon, pineapple, grapes, pomegranate. Two at 20p, one at 10p.

Good reductions on houmous. 10p and 12p.
Two bags of veg selection, £1.20 to 12p.

And good old spinach, can't get enough of it.

My fridge is stuffed with goodies, bargains like these are better than any Christmas present. Here is my healthy lunch today. Chuffin brilliant. I cooked extra pasta last night, enough for today and tomorrow.

I will enter the shopping list on the diary asap when I have a minute. Link above. Tonight's dinner was steamed veg, I have loads of lovely brussel sprouts to get through. YUM  :o))

  1. Is it Tesco's that have those good bargains? My weekly income is £90 per week (and the Council are making me pay £90 monthly for Council Tax). I have appealed and will probably write to my local MP to complain. I live a very impoverished life and would love savings like that!

    Best wishes Natalie

    1. Hi Natalie. Yes, it is Tesco. They start marking down in the afternoon, usually start with the meat department. Then they do another two further markdowns leading up to 9pm. Sometimes I am lucky and arrive at the right time. Sometimes I have to hang about waiting for the person with the pricing machine to come and put the stickers on. Sometimes I am running up the aisle to get there before anyone else has spotted the bargains.

My council tax is not as much as yours. I get a reduction because I have no savings, and 25% off for single person occupancy.

  2. Hey I got the lentil shoots tubs a few weeks ago. I had them
In a wrap with some grated cheese. Very nice! I'm not a big fan of sauce myself but the wrap would've been nice spread thinly with the houmous first- I've only thought of that now as I've seen your shopping! But I'll remember it for myself next time too! Glad bugsy is well, my little kitty is still rather sneezy! Xxxx

  3. Fantastic bargains! One of our dogs has food allergies and has to have a special diet which we supplement with oils, vegetables and a little bit of fresh meat and sardines. It's a good job we buy lots of yellow sticker foods so that we can feed her the diet she needs to keep well. I pop into our local Coop whenever I'm passing and always seem to get yellow sticker goods. Why pay full price when you can get it cheaper?

  4. Nice to get bargains, but it's not organic, so not so good for you really.

    1. Hi Sara. It has been widely debated as to whether organic is better for you, or not. There is no need for me to further that debate here, I tend not to believe all the hype I read. I do my best with the available money I have.

  5. Even the full prices on your stickers is cheaper than what we pay where I live for the produce. You are getting a huge bargain no matter which way you slice it. Lucky you.

  6. You bagged a lot of bargains there! I am adding "Go Yellow Sticker Shopping" to my list of New Year Resolutions. Are the yellow sticker goods all on a special reduced shelf or are they dotted around the store? My local Tesco closes at midnight 6 days a week so I suppose 8pm ish would be a good time to go hunting? I'm a veggie too so all those bargains you got last night would be right up my street!

    1. Hi Linda. I would go at 7pm if the shop is near you and you can nip out. If you have to travel a distance, get in the car, maybe go at 7.30pm, but be prepared to hang about.

In my Tesco they put al the reduced dairy and some salady stuff in one chiller cabinet, at the end of the row, close to the checkouts. The fruit and veg is at the bottom end of the store, in one place with all the other veg. Sometimes, if they have a lot they want to get rid of the put it on a trolley and position it in a prominent position in the centre of the store. Bread and cakes are always in the bakery department, usually on one shelf, or a trolley close by.

Each store has it's own system. You need to make yourself familiar with the layout, and go a few times to get used to the timings when stuff is reduced.

  7. Wow, you really got the bargains. Maybe you can do a post of one day's super saving eating, all three meals and drinks. It would be amazing!
Here the reductions are not such a high percentage, meat maybe reduced by 25% at the most, but at the end of the day all discounted perishable food goes to the Food Bank and helps our needy.

  8. Prepared pomegranate eh! So convenient. It's a bugger to get out of its skin so I reckon you got a super-duper bargain there.

    1. That's the reason why I don't normally buy pomegranates, also the hard seeds in them. I zapped them with a blender to break them up.

  9. Wow that does all look healthy, and cheap. One question though - how do you eat it all before it goes too manky? You coud freeze the veg but not the salads. I go after a late shift as I finish at 8 and it's on the way home, but that's only once a month. I must pop in more often!

It would be lovely to eat organic all of the time but this isnt possible when you are on a serious budget. I grow my own as much as I can though and that is always organic :)

    1. Hello Jane. I check my fridge daily, prioritising what needs eating first. Leafy salads first, I check visually, and sniff it. I eat things before they go off, whether I fancy it or not. I paid for it therefore I eat it, even if it is salads twice a day, and steamed veg every day. Yogurts are ok up to a week after their date. Prepared fruit must be eaten quickly. I make veg into stews or curries and freeze.

If you pass a supermarket and it's late always a good idea to call in. It only takes a few minutes and it could save you £'s.

    1. Hi. We have a big Asda, but it's on the other side of town, too far to go on a regular basis. We also have a small Asda, formerly Netto, in town which I do pop into from time to town.

  11. Wow - we don't get mark downs like that at our supermarkets in NZ, they must just dump the stuff. Even meat that is best before today only gets 10% off.
